As a business owner you no doubt understand the difference between working “in” your business and working “on” your business, but what has that got to do with time management.

“In” your business work is essential to keep your client base happy and coming back.

“On” your business work is essential to the long term success and growth of your business, making sure you have a future.

Managing your time has also the same type of split.

“In” your time, is the time you spend working on the many, many tasks and projects you have on your plate. It allows you to keep you head above water and on top of things on a day to day basis.

But as with the “in” your business work that will only take you so far. You need to take a step back to really ramp up your productivity.

Working “On” your time is an essential part of a daily, weekly, monthly routine.

It is time spent planning and reviewing all the doing work you have been busy with. It includes breaking down projects, prioritizing, scheduling, updating task lists, checking on delegated items etc

It can be easy to gloss over the importance of this activity. It can become “just something else on my plate”. But the time spent here can reap rewards in your productivity later.

At least once per week have scheduled time with yourself to get clear and current with everything you have to do. Treat it as you would an appointment with a client – unbreakable!

It only needs to take about 30 minutes and should cover:

  • What has happened this week – progress & actions generated
  • What is going to happen next week
  • What has progressed on projects
  • Any new projects starting
  • Anything needing to be followed up

Spending 30 minutes per week “on” your time helps you stay on top of things and focused on your goals. So that whether you are working “in” your business or “on” it, your time is maximized.
