Focus Your Mind, Get in Control of Your Time

How to create more time by clustering

– Posted in: overwhelmed prioritization procrastination small business owner stress time management working at home

As small business owners we wear many hats and it can be tough to stay focused when we are trying to do it all. No sooner are we in the marketing zone than we have to switch to become bookkeeper, coach, office manager, networker, chief cook and bottle washer!

So how can we get round this and make better use of the time we have available?

Clustering allows you to stay in the zone.

Simply put clustering is a technique where you group like activities together. They may be similar because of the mindset you need to be in, or because of the venue, or because of the technology you are using.

Let me give you some examples to show you what I mean.

  • If you have clients that come to your home, have them scheduled to come on specific days – this saves you time cleaning and organizing your home, preparing yourself (showering, make-up etc…  come on I’m not the only one who is a slob when no one is looking!)
  • If you have calls to make, group them together so you can get through them efficiently.
  • If you have a networking event, book some “one to one” meetings around it – you are all dressed up and on the road anyway, cut down on travel time by getting them all done in one area.
  • If you write blogs, or articles, write a bunch at once while your brain is in a creative zone. That way you don’t spend time trying to figure out what to write each time and you get into the creative flow more easily.

Think of your own business and look at some of the fragmented tasks you have – what opportunities do you see to cluster and save some time?
